"It is with a heavy heart, given current events, that we feel the need to cancel our upcoming show in Moscow at the Spartak Stadium," the band wrote in a statement to Variety on Sunday (2/27).
"We realized that this moment was not about a rock show in the stadium, it was much bigger than that."
However, Green Day does not rule out returning if the situation allows.
"We know rock and roll is forever and we are confident there will be a time and place for us to return in the future," Green Day said in a statement.
Green Day became the second musician to cancel a concert in Russia due to the heated conflict over the past week. Previously, the band AJR also canceled their show in Moscow in October.
According to Variety, some musicians are scheduled to hold concerts in Moscow this year. Musicians such as Saint John, Tricky, Disclosure, and Bring Me the Horizon are expected to perform in March and April.
Not only that, other names such as One Republic, Khalid, Yungblud, Girl in Red, Judas Priest, to Denzel Curry will also hold a concert next May.
Russia is also slated to host two international music festivals, the 2022 Bol Festival and the 2022 Park Live Festival. However, most of the shows are in danger of being canceled if the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues.
